Classification update: Blue-crowned Motmot

The Blue-crowned Motmot (formerly Momotus momota) has been split into five species by the South American Classification Committee (SACC) on the basis of plumage variation. The Trinidad and Tobago form has been renamed the Trinidad Motmot (Momotus bahamensis). It is found only on Trinidad and Tobago and therefore becomes the islands’ second endemic bird species (the other being the Trinidad Piping-Guan (Pipile pipile)).

This is good for Trinidad & Tobago. I believe there are other species of birds that could be recomended to full speices or subspecies status. There is also a talk amongst some birders that the Motmot in Tobago is a subspecies of the Triniadad Motmot. There is claim that the birds in Tobago is darker than the ones in Trinidad, they live in different habitats and they are less weary than of humans & will approach quite close.

I don’t know if this true. Maybe you know something on this.i will be glad for a response.

I have heard this suggestion before. However there is currently no consideration being given to split the Tobago birds.
